Limmud Durban

New: Download our provisional programme for Limmud Durban 2011!

Limmud SA Durban, now in its fourth year of existence, has risen from a tiny 2 person operation to a thriving group of 12 dedicated volunteers with exciting plans for 2011.

In April we hosted a Taste of Limmud which attracted over 80 people enthusiastic to share the knowledge and expertise of our two very diverse presenters:

  • Shirli Gilbert gave a fascinating presentation on Music of the Holocaust
  • Larry Benjamin helped us to make sense of the political changes sweeping the Middle East

This event was held at Beth Shalom – a Jewish retirement facility celebrating their 40th year of existence.

On Sunday June 12 the Durban Jewish Centre will provide the venue for our first ever Limmud Family Fest – an event aimed at attracting the whole family. Presenters from Durban, Johannesburg and Cape Town will all contribute to this exciting and diverse programme. (See attached flyer, provisional programme, presenter and sessions information and a registration form)

In August – tying in with the two residential Limmud SA events in Johannesburg and Cape Town we will host a Limmud International Conference on Monday 22nd.  This event once again promises to bring expertise from around the world to enrich and stimulate the Durban Jewish community. See the attached information about some of the confirmed presenters.

Durban will once again pursue its objective of outreach into the greater community when Michelle Citrin – a NYC based Singer/Songwriter known for her YouTube sensations, “20 Things to Do with Matzah,” and “Rosh Hashanah Girl”, presents a workshop for youth leaders from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Other visiting presenters will be made available to community organizations like the Durban Holocaust Centre and the Union of Jewish Women in our attempt to build bridges with these organizations and share the wealth of knowledge and expertise that Limmud SA brings to our shores.
