Key Elements of Limmud

One of the key elements of Limmud that adds to its vibrancy is the multiple parallel sessions that take place at once. Thus, there is often a session on religion, philosophy, politics, history, art, dance and much else at any one time. This adds to the excitement and atmosphere of the events.

Elements that make Limmud unique

• There is a wide range of choice to meet all tastes.
• Presenters are also participants and are encouraged to take part in other sessions. Presenters are not paid for their attendance though travel costs from overseas are paid.
• A wide ranging programme is presented with presenters from various denominations and viewpoints. The programme includes theatre performance, music, dance and art.
• The programme is run entirely by volunteers.
• All ages are catered for. Grandparents learn with grandchildren, there is a crèche for parents with young children, and activities for older children. A truly inter-generational spirit is developed.
• People are not referred to by their titles (Rabbi, Dr, Prof) but are called by their first names. This has the effect of breaking down barriers between people.
• Limmud offers the opportunity for South Africans to get exposure to world-class educators and experts in their field as well as to hear individuals from South Africa, some of whom may not previously have had platforms. It also provides a platform for established and aspirant musicians, film-makers, and artists to share their creations (where Jewish-themed works of art sometimes struggle to find these platforms).
• Limmud encourages exposure to the full ambit of Jewish culture: from Klezmer music, to the Lemba, to Martin Buber, Limmud provides learning opportunities relating to the full diversity of Jewish expression.
• Limmud provides a wonderful opportunity for socializing and meeting people from perspectives and world-views with whom one may not usually be exposed.
• Limmud has the ability to ignite excitement and interest from many disaffected Jews through its provision of a diverse and exciting programme that seeks to cater for all tastes.
• Limmud seeks to offer a dynamic model for involvement in the Jewish community to young adults who often become disaffected after leaving youth movements or Jewish Day Schools. Limmud's formula in the United Kingdom has succeeded in attracting young people to play an important role in its leadership and has thus found a successful formula to involve young adults.
